Car preparation
Even for the standard saloon car classes, there’s still a substantial amount of work to be done to prepare a car for racing, - but it’s not rocket science, and should be well within the scope of an enthusiastic amateur with a socket set, a welder, and an angle grinder. For more details please ask Ben McKenzie
The basics are:
- Car must retain its original shape / silhouette.
- All flammable materials to be stripped out of the car
- Doors must be welded shut with three 1" welds up each upright and 1" weld at the bottom of each door. Front doors may be stripped down to the skin.
- All glass must be removed, including mirrors
- Steel weld mesh 1"x1" x 12 gauge must cover the windscreen aperture.
- Air bags / steering locks must be removed
- A safety harness to BSI standard must be fitted (3 point minimum)
- A racing seat must be used (Not a kart seat!)
- Head restraint must be fitted above the seat, inline with the back of the crash helmet.
- Fire Extinguisher of minimum 1kg foam or dry power must be within the drivers reach when harnessed.
- Prefix and numbers on the doors must be 9" high, numbers on the roof fin must be 6" high
- All wiring may be removed
- An isolation switch must be fitted to the off side scuttle.
- A brake light must be fitted to the rear of the car
- The fuel tank must be taken out and replaced by a single non-spill tank of maximum 3 gallon capacity
- All four wheels must lock-up on grass (Anti-lock braking must be removed)
- Tyres on the drive wheels must be remoulded and supplied by a NASA approved supplier
- Catalytic converters must be removed
- Car must be silenced to with in 100Db(A)
- A NASA approved roll cage must be fitted
The full specification for the roll cage can be found in the NASA rulebook. Most roll cages are home-built and can be made from any of the following materials;
- Square steel tube; 1"x1" 0.102"
- Round steel tube; 38mm diameter x 2.5 mm
- Round steel tube; 42mm diameter x 2.5 mm
- Round steel tube; 50mm diameter x 2 mm
